How To Replace Your Dryer's Heating Element

Do you pull your clothes out of the dryer after a normal cycle and they are still wet and cold? One of the most common reasons for dryer malfunction is a broken heating element. The element is vital in producing heat. Without heat, tumble dryers will take much longer to dry a normal batch of clothes. This, of course, can get quite expensive on your energy bills. This is why you should replace or repair your heating element as soon as you notice decreased heat. Here's how you can do it on your own!

Replacing the Heating Element

Buying a heating element is much cheaper than buying a whole new dryer. Of course, the installation of a replacement element will require a little bit of work. Make sure you buy the exact element for your dryer brand and model. Most look very similar, but they are not universal. You might need to order directly from the manufacturer to ensure that you get the right replacement.

Installing the New Element

Before you begin the installation, make sure you unplug the power supply. Also, you will need to remove the output hose by loosening the clamp around the inlet. This allows you to pull the dryer away from the wall so you can access the panel on the back. The access panel is easy to remove with a Phillips or flathead screwdriver. Once the panel is removed, look for the heating element. It is often partly covered with a small encasement that might block your view. Some models even have a "Heating Element" label on the encasement, so it is not too hard to find. Refer to your replacement element to make sure you have spotted the right device. Luckily, there are not many devices inside the dryer compartment that look like the heating element.

To change the heating element you just need to remove the screws along the mounting bracket. These small screws are easy to remove. Some will be secured with a wing nut so you don't even need to use any tools. These screws are easier to lose if you drop them inside the dryer, so be careful! Installing the new power supply will take just a few seconds if you have the right replacement. Simply plug in the power supply and reattach the screws to the mounting bracket.

Now, just put your dryer back together and test it out. This is a cheap alternative to replacing your dryer outright. If you need professional assistance, visit a business like Collier County Appliance Service, Inc.
