How To Save Money On Appliance Repairs

One of your precious and much needed appliances broke down. You can't afford a new one, but you can't afford a repairman either. How will you make things work again? Hope is not lost. Here are several ways to save money on appliance repairs for even the most broken and helpless.

Check the Warranty

No matter how old that appliance is, go and check the warranty. Why? Many appliances come with pretty good warranties for the whole appliance. Sometimes specific parts on the appliance have their own warranties, including lifetime warranties. You don't know until you check. If you've lost the manual with the warranty information, do a check online. Many times, you can find manuals free of charge for your appliances.

Call the Manufacturer

Don't call and ask for a technician to do the repair. Manufacturer technicians tend to charge more. They need to make money for themselves and the manufacturing company.

You're going to call the manufacturer to see if they can do anything to help you. Tell them your situation and what's wrong with the appliance. They might be able to work with you and get you the part you need cheaper. This often depends on the age of the appliance and how nice the customer service rep is. Ask to talk to a higher up manager, if necessary. Still don't get anywhere? Hang up and try again later when you'll get a different representative or manager who might be more receptive.

Go DIY

The problem with your appliance might require only a simple repair. Don't pay someone to come in your home and charge you for labor when you can do it yourself. Keep in mind; this should only be done for simple repairs. Do an online search for the problem and see if it is simple enough to DIY. If it is, follow the steps carefully and do the repair yourself. You'll only end up paying for the parts and tools required.

Choose Local

If the problem requires an expert, go local. Find a small appliance repair company. Smaller companies will have fewer employees and fewer expenses so they can charge less for the work. You also won't have to go through the manufacturer, which will take part of the cut. Do research and ask around for the best small, local repair company.

Don't spend tons of money repairing your appliances. Use these tips to save money and get everything back in working order.
