Water Isn't Draining From Your Washer? Here's What To Do

If the water in your washer is not draining or pumping out of your machine, something is wrong with your water pump. Over time, your  water pump can get damaged and worn-out. If you know a little bit about how your washing machine works, you can replace the water pump on your own. If you don't know much about how your washing machine works, you may want to hire an appliance repair technician to complete this repair for you as it requires a certain degree of technical knowledge.

Order A Replacement Pump

The first thing you are going to need to do is order or pick up a replacement pump. You will need to know who the manufacturer is of your washer as well as the model number. You can find this information printed on your washer or you can find this information inside of your owner's manual.

Move Your Washer

You are going to need to turn your washer on its side in order to remove the water pump from the bottom of your washer. In order to do that, you will need to move your washer to somewhere to where you have enough room to work. You may want to rent a dolly or get a friend to help you move your washing machine.

Wherever you move your washing machine to, place it on its side. You'll need to remove the front panel in order to access the water pump. Your owner's manual should show you the location; it should be in the front of your washer.

Remove The Discharge Hose

You will need to use a pair of pliers to pull the discharge hose off of your water pump. You'll need to squeeze the clamp in order to loosen the hose; it should easily slide out. Set aside the discharge hose; you'll want to attach it to the new water pump.

Remove The Pump

In order to remove the pump, you will need to remove the spring clamps that hold the pump in place. They should be located on the bottom of the water pump. If they are attached with screws, you'll need a screwdriver to remove them. However, if the pump is not screwed down, you many just need to use a pair of pliers to loosen the pump.

Then you will need to pull the pump off the motor. It should slide off without any problems; if it gives you any resistance, you may need to twist the water pump a little bit in order to loosen it.

Compare The Pumps

Once you have removed the water pump, compare it to the one that you purchased. Make sure that it is identical; if it is not, you'll want to return the one you purchased and bring the old one with you as a comparison.

Place The New Pump

Replacing the new pump is relatively simple; you'll just need to slide the new pump into place over the motor. Then, you'll want to reattach the spring clamps and make sure that they are holding the new water pump firmly in place.

Next, you'll want to push the new hose into place. If the hose looks damaged at all, you'll want to use a new hose. Then, you'll want to turn your washing machine upright and put it back into place.

All you need to do now is test out your washing machine and make sure that the new pump you purchased worked. If you feel that this repair is about your skill level, call an appliance repair technician (like those at Appliance Doctor) to fix your washer.
